Digital Equipment Corp. introduced the compact PDP-8 in 1965. At $18,000 this system was less costly than the $120,000 PDP-1 and could sit on a desktop rather than requiring a sizeable corner of a room. The compact size of the PDP-8 caused it to become a popular machine in scientific laboratories.
